QUESTIONS THAT CHANGE THE CONVERSATION

If the risk report looks better than the project performance, something is wrong.

Use these questions to test whether your current arrangements produce early action, clear ownership and decisions, or simply document exposure after it has moved.

BEFORE THE NEXT REPORT

Eight questions worth asking in the room.

01

Has the current risk service let this project down more than once, despite the name behind it?

Reputation is not a substitute for the senior attention actually applied to your decision.

02

Which chart on the last dashboard changed a decision?

If the answer is none, the reporting may be describing risk rather than managing it.

03

How early was the last ‘early warning’?

A warning issued after the cost, delay or claim is visible is a record of impact, not a chance to prevent it.

04

Who owns the five exposures that could hurt value most?

A name in a register matters only when it is tied to an action, date, evidence and escalation threshold.

05

What assumption would change the capital decision if it proved wrong?

The most material exposure may sit inside the business case, not the risk register.

06

Do cost, schedule, change and risk tell the same story?

Contradictory forecasts are themselves an exposure and a signal that the decision view is incomplete.

07

What evidence would make us stop, renegotiate or restructure?

Set decision conditions before optimism, pressure and sunk cost make them harder to apply.

08

If the risk report disappeared tomorrow, would the next decision change?

If not, ask whether the reporting earns the attention, time and budget it receives.

PRACTICAL EXPLAINERS

What independent project risk advice should do.

Does an independent review replace the project team or project controls?

No. It tests the evidence, joins information across disciplines and gives the owner, board, project sponsor or funding stakeholder an independent view for a defined decision.

When is the best time to commission a risk review?

Before an irreversible commitment, when warning signals conflict, or when confidence in the existing forecast weakens. Earlier evidence usually leaves more decision options open.

What makes a warning genuinely early?

It identifies a leading signal, sets a threshold, names who must act and reaches the decision maker while a practical response is still available.

Why use focused senior expertise instead of a large permanent layer?

Some decisions need concentrated independent judgement for a defined period. The scope can be matched to the consequence and timing of that decision without expanding the project organisation unnecessarily.

Is team education included free with advisory work?

Training, leadership briefings and team workshops are separate commissioned professional services. Their scope, audience, preparation and commercial terms are agreed for each engagement.

DO THE QUESTIONS FEEL FAMILIAR?

A confidential independent review can show where to begin.
